I was born on 4. Juli 1950 in Prerov and studied medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University Freiburg im Breisgau.
After finishing medical school in 1976 I have commenced my residency in internal medicine as a teaching assistant of the University Münster. After receiving a research grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft I have moved to the United States to resume my work at the Cardiovascular Research Institute and later my fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University Hospitals of the University of California at San Francisco. From 1987 on I have worked as professor of medicine at the University of Birmingham, Alabama and have remained in the United States with two interruptions until 1993.
Following my return to Germany I have worked as interventional cardiologist in Darmstadt and since 1997 through Summer 2005 as director of the Department of Cardiology and Angiology at the Heart Centre Coswig (Anhalt).
I am married since 1983. We have four children; my hobbies are classical literature and sports.
